St. Andrew’s Takes Canadian Title

January 20th, 2012

Saints make trip to western Canada and come away with title at Snowball Classic.

While most teams stayed at home last weekend for a variety of top local events, St. Andrew’s School made the long trip to Abbotsford, Canada for the Abbotsford Collegiate Snowball Classic, a very prestigious tournament in Western Canada.

The trip began last Wednesday when St. Andrew’s flew out to Seattle and then took a 55 passenger coach bus for a two and a half hour drive to Abbotsford, a city of approximately 170,000 people located one hour outside of Vancouver.

The Snowball Classic annually invites one American school to participate in the event each year.  St. Andrew’s was selected in 2012 after Los Angeles’ Fairfax High School represented the U.S. last year.  All games in the tournament are played under FIBA rules with 10 minute quarters.

St. Andrew’s opened the tournament with a 106-46 win over Abby Collegiate on Thursday and followed that up with an 88-46 win over St. George’s in Friday’s semifinal.

In Saturday’s final, the Saints defeated Kelowna, British Columbia’s top ranked team who came in riding a 15 game winning streak.

Cedric Kuakumensah was named the tournament’s MVP while Henry Bolton and Bonzie Colson were named first team All-Tournament and Tom Garrick second team.

“This was a big win for the Saints,” head coach Michael Hart said.  “It was our first ever championship at a national or international level event and a great experience for our kids and coaches.”
